Exercise and Neuroplasticity: How Movement Helps the Developing Brain

As parents, advocates, and professionals supporting children with autism and other developmental differences, we are constantly searching for meaningful ways to help the brain grow, adapt, and thrive. One of the most powerful — and often underestimated — tools available to us is exercise.

Movement is not only important for physical health. It plays a profound role in shaping the brain itself. This process is known as neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change, reorganize, and form new neural connections in response to experience.

Understanding how exercise supports neuroplasticity can help families and educators make informed decisions that benefit a child’s learning, emotional regulation, and overall development.

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s lifelong capacity to adapt. During childhood, this ability is especially strong. Neural pathways are constantly being strengthened, refined, or replaced as children interact with their environment. Every new experience — learning a skill, solving a problem, communicating a need, or navigating a sensory challenge — contributes to this process.

Research in neuroscience has shown that physical activity directly influences brain structure and function. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, delivering oxygen and nutrients that support cellular health. It stimulates the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that plays a critical role in neuron growth, survival, and synaptic plasticity. This biochemical change supports learning and memory.

For children with autism, exercise may offer additional benefits. Many autistic individuals experience differences in motor coordination, sensory processing, attention, and emotional regulation. Structured physical activity can help strengthen motor planning, improve body awareness, and support sensory integration.

Studies have found that aerobic exercise can improve attention, reduce repetitive behaviors in some children, and enhance executive functioning skills such as planning and impulse control. Physical activity can also help regulate the autonomic nervous system, reducing stress responses and promoting a calmer baseline state. When a child’s nervous system is more regulated, learning and social participation often become easier.

Exercise also contributes to emotional well-being. Movement stimulates the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are involved in mood regulation and motivation. For children who experience anxiety, frustration, or sensory overload, physical activity can provide a constructive outlet for energy and tension.

Importantly, neuroplasticity is experience-dependent. This means that repeated, meaningful movement experiences can strengthen neural pathways over time. Activities such as swimming, hiking, martial arts, dancing, cycling, and therapeutic horseback riding engage multiple brain systems simultaneously. These experiences integrate balance, coordination, visual processing, proprioception, and social interaction.

Outdoor exercise may have unique advantages. Exposure to nature has been associated with reduced stress, improved attention, and enhanced mood in children. Natural environments provide varied sensory input that can support adaptive brain responses.

For families, the goal is not to create a rigid exercise program but to incorporate consistent movement into daily life. Short periods of structured activity, combined with free play, can be highly beneficial. Individual preferences should guide choices. Some children thrive in team sports, while others benefit from solitary activities like hiking or swimming.

Collaboration with therapists can help identify exercises that support specific developmental goals. Physical therapists and occupational therapists often use movement-based interventions to build strength, coordination, and functional independence.

It is also important to recognize that exercise does not replace other therapies. Rather, it enhances them. A child who is physically regulated and neurologically engaged is often better able to participate in speech therapy, behavioral intervention, and academic learning.

As research on neuroplasticity continues to evolve, one message remains clear: the brain is not fixed. It is dynamic, responsive, and capable of growth throughout life. Movement is one of the most natural and accessible ways to support that growth.
